Salty
When I was in the Navy, there was a term used to refer to sailors that had a great deal of experience. The term was “salty” and it was an honor to be called salty by other sailors. Typically these guys had a wealth of knowledge and made those around them better. Their knowledge was from experience or time at sea. Or maybe better said, these “salty” guys had time in the action. They lived it.
In Luke 14, Jesus tells those around Him how much they must give up in order to be His disciple. He says we must love Him more than anything or anyone. Jesus must be first. Then Jesus seems to wedge this line in between ideas, “salt is excellent”. (Luke 14:34)
If you and I begin to chase after Jesus and really understand what our purpose in life is, we are living out the greatest commandment. We are loving God with all our hearts and because God is first we love others more than we love ourselves.
Our desire is to be Godly men and women, not men and women that know about God. There is a big difference. A Godly man or woman will put Jesus above everything. In doing so, these Godly folks (which is you and me) experience Jesus in their lives and are transformed. They are in the action. They are on the move because following Jesus is the number one objective.
These folks are salty!
Yes, we are called to give up everything and run after Jesus. Yes, it is stepping into an adventure. Yes, it is the unknown. Yes, it may seem scary. But our fear is replaced by faith. We run with confidence knowing we are created by God and His Spirit lives inside of us. We know the Light shines the brightest in the darkest areas.
Are you salty? Do you make those around you better? Does your life with Jesus season your friends and family? Because we are continually with Jesus, in the action, we should be the best husbands, wives, parents, children, employees, students, business owners, leaders our communities have ever seen.
