Pain to Power

For several years now, Isaiah 61 has resonated in my life.  The first seven verses paint the most beautiful picture of what God desires to do in our lives.  I cannot begin to tell you how much these words mean to me.  The hope that comes from words written almost 3000 years ago is miraculous to say the least.  Freedom, restoration, renaming are all spoken of in this text.  Something broken and ugly becoming something beautiful and new is the promise.

In Luke 4, Jesus takes center stage and reads from Isaiah 61.  This is said by some to be the beginning of Jesus’ public ministry.  He lays out a road map of what He, the Son of God, is here to do.  Preach the Good News to the poor, heal the broken hearted, announce freedom to all captives, and pardon all prisoners.  I do not want anyone to miss this - did you see it?  Jesus came for ALL captives and ALL prisoners, not a few here or there, everyone!

Last Friday night I had the privilege of gathering with a group of wonderful people.  It just so happened to be “Fried Chicken Friday”!  So, it starts off pretty good and then seems to just get better.  After dinner we all gather for a special time of celebration.  We celebrate all that Jesus has done!  This week was a unique night.  The question was asked, “Would anyone like to say anything about what God is doing in your life?”

Story after story was shared of Isaiah 61 coming alive in peoples lives!  Freedom!  Chains broken!  Darkness removed!  Hope was Alive!  I heard bold proclamations made - “Because of Jesus, I have traded pain for His loving Promises!” and Jesus has taken my pain and replaced it with His Power!”  I was looking at what was once viewed as rubble, broken trash, now shining brightly as Priests of God!  Miracle after miracle was shared.  Each story a one of a kind work of art, flowers from ashes!  Jesus’ beauty on full display!

What I saw and what I have lived out has caused me to rethink Isaiah 61:1-7.  Because of what God has done and is continuing to do, He has flipped the script.  His promise has now become a prayer.  Would you pray it with me today?

Gracious God, because I have been restored, rebuilt, and renamed - will You send me to preach good news to the poor, heal the heartbroken, announce freedom to all captives and prisoners.  Amen!
