Dinner for Two
Have you ever enjoyed a really good meal? I am not talking about a good burger or a basket of hot wings. (Which are delicious in their own right) The type of meal I am thinking of is elegant, well thought out by a chef, designed to “take the diner on a culinary trip”. Some people feel swept away by the experience; they aren’t thinking about anything but the meal and who they are dining with. It’s the type of meal many plan and enjoy on a very special occasion and share it with someone they love dearly!
The psalmist, David, describes just such a meal. He is foreshadowing the relationship we will have with Jesus. In Psalms 23:5 (ESV), he writes, “You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies”. Have you ever thought what that sentence means? The Message puts it like this, “You serve me a six-course dinner right in front of my enemies”. As the storms of life rage all around us, we dine with Jesus!
We are not standing up in a rush shoveling in a “meat product” we grabbed off a roller grill at the quickie store with thoughts of fear and worry clouding our minds. NO! NO! NO! We are dining with the Risen King!
You, my friend, are sitting down at a beautiful table, crisp and clean, with the One who calms the storms. Yes, life is swirling all around you, but Jesus is with you. Standing up to the raging waves, taking on the burning flames, withstanding the forces of hell that loom all around - so you and I can experience peace!
Today, give this a try. When you start to feel overwhelmed, things seem to be getting out of control, your mind is spinning in too many directions - take a moment and remember you are dining with Jesus. Focus on Him. Call out to Him. Ask Him to calm the storm. Jesus will never leave you or abandon you! You are His favorite!
